Best Time to Visit

Vietnam's climate varies dramatically from north to south — there's always a good region to visit.

Nov – Apr Best time

Dry season across the south and central coast. Cool and clear in the north (Dec–Feb can be chilly in Hanoi).

May – Aug Good for north

Hot and rainy in the south, but the north (Sapa, Ha Long) is green and lush. Expect afternoon showers.

Sep – Oct Shoulder season

Typhoon risk on the central coast. Fewer crowds and lower prices. Central highlands are beautiful.

Essential Travel Tips

Everything you need to know before you go.

Visa

Most nationalities get 45 days visa-free or can obtain an e-visa online for ~$25. Apply at least 3 days before travel.

Currency

Vietnamese Dong (VND). Budget ~$30–60/day for comfortable mid-range travel. Cash is still king outside cities.

Getting Around

Fly between major cities (cheap with VietJet/Bamboo). Night trains between Hanoi and Da Nang are a scenic overnight option.

Food

Eat where locals eat — street stalls and pho shops. A full meal costs under $3. Try pho, bánh mì, bún bò Huế, and cơm tấm.

Connectivity

Buy a local SIM at the airport for ~$5. Viettel and Vinaphone have the best coverage across rural areas.

Health

Drink bottled water, use sunscreen, and bring mosquito repellent for rural areas. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
